IDBI categorized as
private bank –
· IDBI Bank has been categorized as a private sector
bank by the Reserve Bank of India,
with effect from January 21, 2019.
· The move came following the acquisition by Life
Insurance Corporation of India (LIC).
· SBI, ICICI Bank and HDFC Bank will continue to be
identified as Domestic Systematically Important Banks (D-SIBs).
First workshop on IEMF
held –
· The NITI Aayog and the United States Agency for
International Development (USAID) organized the first workshop on development
of India Energy Modelling Forum.
· It has been envisaged as a pan-stakeholder platform
for debating ideas, scenario-planning and discussions India’s Energy
Future.
· The 2-day workshop was held with the support of the
Pacific Northwest National Laboratory (PNNL).
MPATGM successfully
test fired –
· DRDO successfully test fired Man Portal Anti-Tank
Guided Missile (MPATGM) for the second time on 14 March 2019 in the ranges of Rajasthan Desert.
· It is an indigenously developed, low height, fire and
forget missile.
· MPATGM is incorporated with advance features including
state-of-the-art Imaging Infrared Radar (IIR) Seeker with integrated avionics.
83 supermassive black
holes discovered –
· Astronomers discovered 83 quasars powered by
supermassive black holes 13 billion light-years away from the earth.
· The finding is published in The Astrophysical Journal.
· Supermassive black holes, found at centers of
galaxies, can be millions or even billions of times from massive than sun.
· A supermassive black holes becomes visible when gas
accretes onto it, causing it to shine as a quasar.
RBI Governor chaired
the panel of regulators –
· Markets regulator SEBI, insurance regulator IRDAI, and
Pension Fund Regulator PFRDA, along with senior officials of the finance
minister discussed key issues faced by the economies.
· The meeting of the sub-committee of the Financial
Stability and Development and Council was chaired by RBI Governor Shaktikanta
Das.
· They also reviewed the functioning of state-level
coordination committee.
NTPC signed pact with
Indian Railways –
· NTPC signed a MoU with Hazipur-based East Central
Railway Zone for transportation for fly ash under Indian Railways’ Special
Freight Train Operators (SFTO) scheme.
· The move will help enhance ash utilization at Rihand
and Vindyanchal Super Thermal Power plants.
· NTPC has become the first entity in the country to
sign an SFTO agreement with Indian Railways.
FINE inaugurated by
President –
· President Ram Nath Kovind inaugurated the Festival of
Innovation and Entrepreneurship (FINE) in Gandhinagar in Gujarat
on 15 March 2019.
· FINE is an initiative to recognize, respect, showcase,
reward innovations and foster supportive ecosystem for innovators.
· It is aimed at providing a platform for innovators for
building linkages with potential stakeholders.
World Consumer Right:
15 March –
· World Consumer Rights Day is celebrated every year on
15 March as part of an initiative by Consumer International.
· It was inspired by President John F Kennedy, who was
the first leader in the world to address the issue of consumer rights in a
special message sent to the US Congress on 15 March 1962.
· The theme for World Consumers Day 2019 is ‘Trusted
Smart Products’.
Russia issued a commemorative coin –
· The Bank of Russia has issued a commemorative coin to
mark 5 years since Russia
staged a disputed referendum in Ukraine’s
Crimea.
· The Bank of Russia has issued a base metal coin in
denomination of 5 rubbles.
· The face value of the coin also features an
illegally-built bridge to connect the peninsular to mainland Russia.
Greta nominated for
Nobel Peace Prize –
· Greta Thuberg, the Swedish Schoolgirl who has inspired
an international movement to fight climate change, has been nominated to
receive Nobel Peace Prize 2019.
· If she wins, she would be the youngest recipient since
Pakistani Malala Yoousufzai, who was 17 when she received the prize.
· She was nominated by three Norwegian MPs.
Supreme Court set aside
ban on Sreesanth –
· The Supreme Court has set aside the life ban on
cricketer S Sreesanth, imposed by the BCCI.
· The disciplinary committee of the BCCI may reconsider
within three months the quantum of punishment to be given to Sreesanth.
· The disciplinary committee of the Board of Control for
Cricket in India,
BCCI imposed the ban on Sreesanth for his alleged involvement in the 2013 IPL
spot-fixing scandal.
Padmanabha won
Commonwealth Youth Award –
· Padmanabha Gopalan, the founder of no food waste, was
named the winner of the Commonwealth Youth Award for the Asian region in London.
· His initiative runs a geo-mapping platform, which
allows user to drop food at located ‘hunger spots’.
· It has so far recovered over 650,000 meals across 14
cities and the platform has been used by over 12,000 volunteers.
Dolphin numbers dropped
in Gandak –
· A count of the Ganges River Dolphin in rivers, Gandak
and Ganghara, has revealed the presence of 280 dolphins.
· The number of Dolphins recorded in a 324-KM stretch of
Gandak river was 155.
· The last survey carried out in 2009-10 had recorded
the presence of 257 Dolphins in the same stretch.
· In a 99-km stretch of Ghaghara river in Bihar, researchers found the presence of 125 Dolphins.
