Appointments –
·       The Government of India appointed Subhash Chandra Garg
as Finance Secretary in the Ministry of Finance on 8 March 2019.
·       Ashu Khullar, currently the head of Asia Pacific
Capital Markets Origination at Citigroup Inc., was appointed as Chief Executive
Officer of Citi India, with effect from 1 April 2019.
Committee formed to
examine insurance scheme –
·       The Government 
of India
has set up a 5 member committee to examine issues related to framing of a
structured scheme for providing insurance cover to advocates.
·       The committee will be headed by Legal Affairs
Secretary Alok Srivastava.
·       The committee will also have one representative each
from the Bar Council of India and the State Bar Councils.
AICF recognized as
National Sports Federation –
·       The Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports granted
provisional recognisation of All India Carrom Federation (AICF) as National
Spots Federation with immediate effect.
·       It will facilitate the participation of India Athelets
in the forthcoming National/International competitions.
·       The recognisation means granting a major role to AICF
for development of the carom sport in India.
Andhra and Madhya
Pradesh got new NCLT benches –
·       The Government of India has approved the establishment
of two new benches of National Company Law Tribunal (NCLT) for the faster
disposal of cases.
·       The benches will be established at Amaravati in the
Andhra Pradesh and the other at Indore
in Madhya Pradesh.
·       The Jurisdiction of the Bench at Amravati
will be the state of Andhra Pradesh and that of Indore will be the state of Madhya Pradesh.
PM Modi inaugurated
PDUIA in Greater Noida –
·       The Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated Pandit
Deendayal Upadhyaya Institute of Archaeology (PDUIA) in Greater Noida on 9
March 2019.
·       The Institute of Archaeology (AI) is an Academic wing
of Archeological Survey of India under the Ministry of Culture.
·       The aim of this Institute is to provide an opportunity
for students to achieve excellence in the field of Archaeology.
India and ADB signed $26 Million Loan Agreement –
·       The Government of India and the Asian Development Bank
(ADB) signed a $26 Million Loan Agreement on 8 March 2019.
·       The Loan will be used for improving drainage
infrastructure in Dibrugarh town of Assam
under the Assam Urban Infrastructure Investment Program.
·       The program is helping to improve solid waste
management and drainage infrastructure in Guwahati and Dibrugarh.
India and WB signed $137 Million Loan Agreement –
·       On 8 March 2019, the Government of India and World
Bank signed a $137 Million loan agreement for financing the Dam Rehabilitation
and Improvement Project (DRIP).
·       DRIP will help rehabilitate and modernize over 220
selected large dams in the States of Karnataka, Kerala, Madhya Pradesh, Odisha,
Tamil Nadu, and Uttarakhand.
·       In 2010, the World Bank approved $350 million to
finance the DRIP.
3-member panel to
mediate in Ayodhya dispute –
·       A Constitution Bench of the Supreme Court appointed
3-member panel to mediate in Ayodhya dispute on 8 March 2019.
·       The Panel consists of Former Supreme Court judge
F.M.I. Kalifulla as Chairman, Art of Living Founder Sri Sri Ravi Shankar, and
Sriram Panchu, a senior advocate with experience in alternative dispute
resolution.
·       The mediation will start in Faizabad districts of
Uttar Pradesh.
SBI links short term
loan rates to repo rate –
·       In a first of its kind, State Bank of India
has decided to link the interest rate paid on the savings bank balance of over
Rs. 1 lakh to the repo rate.
·       It will also link cash credit accounts and overdrafts,
with limits above Rs. 1 lakh, to the repo rate.
·       The new system will come into effect from 1 May 2019.
·       The aim of the system is to increase the effectiveness
of monetary transmission.
India Cooling Action Plan launched –
·       Ministry for Environment, Forest
and Climate Change launched ‘India Cooling Action Plan’ (ICAP) on 8 March 2019.
·       ICAP is a 20-year road map (2018 to 2038) to address
the cooling requirements for all sectors such as buildings, cold chain,
transport and refrigeration.
·       It aims t reduce cooling demand across sectors by 20%
to 25% and reduce refrigerant demand by 25% to 30% by 2037-38.
Strategy document
UNNATEE launched –
·       Bureau of Energy Efficiency (BEE) launched a strategy
document titled ‘UNNATEE’ (Unlocking National Energy Efficiency potential) on 8
March 2019.
·       It describes a framework and implementation strategy
to establish a clear linkage between energy supply-demand scenarios and energy
efficiency opportunities.
·       The document addressed India’s environmental and climate
change mitigation action plan.
‘Ratnagarbha’ conferred
on 10 mothers –
·       On the occasion of International Women’s Day, Ten
successful mothers, whose children have become achievers in their filed of
work, have been awarded ‘Ratnagarbha’ award on 8 March 2019.
·       The mothers of billiards icon Sourav Kothari,
filmmaker Kaushik Ganguly were among those who were given the award.
·       The awards was instituted by the Bengal Chamber of
Commerce and Industry.
Marshall Islands to launch digital currency –
·       The Marshall
  Islands will launch a digital currency named
‘SOV’ this year.
·       The Marshall
  Islands government partnered with Neema, the
Israel-based company, to develop the digital currency.
·       The Marshall
  Islands, a tiny Pacific atoll nation with a
population of just 55,000 passed legislation in 2018 to develop digital
currency as legal tender.
Sadiq Khan named UK Politician
of the Year –
·       London Mayor Sadiq Khan was named the Politician of
the year at the Annual Politician and Public Life Awards presented by Britain’s
Asian Voice’ weekly newspaper.
·       He was awarded for his ongoing contribution to the
politician life.
·       UK defence secretary Gavin Williamson was named as
Cabinet Minister of the Year and Indian-origin politician Priti Patel named as
Conservation Party MP of the Year.
Govt liabilities rise
to Rs. 83.40 lakh crore –
·       As per the government report, the total liabilities of
the government increased to Rs. 83.40 lakh crore at the end of the December
2018 quarter. 
·       Public debt accounted for 89.5% of total outstanding
liabilities by December 2018.
·       During the October-December 2018 period, the central
government issued dated securities worth Rs. 1.27 lakh crore.
RBI slaps penalties on
36 major banks –
·      
The RBI imposed
penalties worth Rs. 71 crore on 36 public, private and foreign banks on 9 March
2019.
·      
It imposed penalties
for non-compliance with various directions on time-bound implementation and
strengthening of SWIFT operations.
·      
The banks include
Bank of Baroda, ICICI Bank, SBI and YES Bank.
·      
SWIFT is a global
messaging software used for transactions by financing entities.
Indian Railways
appoints OSD for new zone –
·       The Ministry of Railway appointed SS Srinivas as
Officer on Special Duty (OSD) of South Coast Railway on 8 March 2019.
·       SS Srinivas, an Indian Railway Personnel Service
(IRPS) officer, was working as Chief Personnel Officer (Administration), South
Central Railway.
·       The South Coast Railway (SCoR) is headquartered at Visakhapatnam and comprises Guntakal, Guntu and Vijayawada divisions.
India-Japan hold
inaugural space dialogue –
·       The inaugural India-Japan Space Dialogue was held in New Delhi on 8 March
2019.
·       The Dialogue brought together Ministries and agencies
related to outer space of the two countries and provided an opportunity for
information exchange on the respective space policies.
·       Discussions were also held on bilateral cooperation
between JAXA-ISRO, their space industries, global navigation satellite system.
Assam Government announces cultural award –
·       Assam government announces that the ‘Srimanata Sankardeva
Award 2017’ will be conferred on Satriya exponent Basistha Dev Sarma of Barpeta
Satra.
·       It also declared that the ‘Madhavdev Award’ 2016 will
be given to Jugadananda Chandra Goswami of Mayamora Dinjoy Satra.
·       The ‘Kalicharan Brahman Award’ 2018 will be given to
the Satradhikar of Borongajuli Srimanta Sankardev Satra.
Center approves
strategy to create carbon sink –
·       The Government of India approved a strategy for
creating an additional carbon sink of 2.5 to 3 billion tonnes of carbon dioxide
equivalent through forest and tree cover by 2030.
·       The strategy will help in fighting against climate
change.
·       Carbon sinks are natural or artificial reservoirs that
absorb and store the atmosphere’s carbon dioxide and biological mechanisms.
India launches 3rd IT corridor in China –
·       India launches its third IT corridor in China that will facilitates partnerships between
India
and Chinese companies.
·       The IT corridor was developed by the National
Association of Software and Services Companies (NASSCOM) and China’s Xuzhou
city from Jiangsu Province in China.
·       The other two IT corridors are at Dalian
and Guiyang cities of China.
